Questions
The things worth asking first.
What it does, then what it will never do. The awkward answers are further down and none of them are hidden.
What do I actually do each day?
Three things, and they take about two minutes. Write what you traded in your own words — no form to fill in. Read one lesson, chosen from what you just wrote. Then answer whether you kept your own rules. A day you did not trade still counts: sitting out is often the disciplined choice.
What is Rule Check?
A free page on this site, separate from the app. It asks how often you think you kept your trading rules last week, then asks you to count, and shows you the gap. It takes about a minute, needs no account, and stores nothing — your answers stay in the browser tab and are gone when you close it.
Who is it for?
Retail traders in Canada and the United States, from someone who has never placed a trade to someone with years of history. More precisely: the trader who has already read the books, already knows they should have honoured that stop, and has no system for actually doing it tomorrow.
Which markets and instruments does it cover?
North America — Canada first, the United States alongside it — and stocks, ETFs and listed options. Anything regional by nature (tax treatment, registered accounts, investor protection, exchanges, regulators, settlement) is written for those two countries. Everything else — risk, psychology, indicators, strategy, discipline — is jurisdiction-free and travels anywhere. Futures, forex, CFDs, bonds and mutual funds are outside what it teaches and outside what it measures; an import may still contain them, but no lesson covers them and no finding is written about them.
Do I have to connect a broker?
No. The whole daily loop works with nothing connected, and the free plan includes a manual log. Connecting one on Pro means trades arrive on their own and findings read from a fuller record — but a user who never connects gets a quieter product, not a worse one. If your broker is not covered, Pro and Ultimate can import a CSV export instead: the file is read on your device, the trades are stored, and the file is not kept.
What are the plans, and is there a free trial?
Free is the whole daily loop: 288 of the 1,000 lessons, 10 priced manual trades per 30 days and 3 reflection reads/day. Pro is your record: hourly read-only broker sync, an unlimited trade log, all 1,000 lessons and every path, Patterns, Exits vs plan, the Weekly Statement, peer comparison by discipline, CSV import and a picture reader at 3 reads/month. Ultimate is Pro plus the AI and tax tools: the coach chat (300/month), the weekly AI coach note, the Deep dive, What-if replay, superficial-loss and wash-sale flags, the tax-year report and a picture reader at 60 reads/month. Any paid plan starts with 7 days free: Apple or Google holds your payment method, Tradeonomist never sees your card, and if you cancel before day 7 you are not charged. The trial is once per store account. Prices are on the pricing page.
What is the AI coach?
A weekly note on your week and a chat you can ask about your own record, both on Ultimate. It is educational. It answers only from your own record, says when the record cannot answer, and gives no advice: no picks, no entries, no targets, nothing to buy or sell. To write a note or an answer, a summary of your own record is sent to a language model. Chat is capped at 300/month.
What are superficial-loss flags, and the tax-year report?
Tell the app your tax residence and Ultimate flags sales at a loss that Canada’s superficial-loss rule or the US wash-sale rule may affect, based on your own trades. The tax-year report lists each sale with its adjusted cost base and any such adjustment, and exports to CSV or PDF. They are educational summaries of what you logged, not tax advice. Accounts held by a spouse are not considered, and your broker’s own slips are authoritative. Confirm anything that affects your taxes with a qualified professional.
What is the picture reader?
Choose a screenshot or photo of a trade and the app reads it into a draft that you check before saving. The image is sent to a language model to be read and is then discarded; it is never stored. Ultimate gets 60 reads/month and Pro gets 3; Free does not include it.
What does Ultimate add over Pro?
Everything in Pro, plus: the weekly AI coach note; superficial-loss and wash-sale flags; the Deep dive (what each broken rule cost over twelve months, combined what-if replays, your entry reason against your discipline, how the day after a hard day goes, and a tax view of non-registered results); an AI coach you can ask about your own record, 300/month; a picture reader at 60 reads/month instead of 3; What-if replay; and the tax-year report. None of it changes your Score.
How accurate are synced trades?
Sales are priced against the pooled average cost of the shares you held, which is the Canadian adjusted cost base. Stock splits are applied and holdings moved from a closed account carry over. Every sync also checks the holdings the app computed against the positions your broker reports. A sale it cannot match to shares it knows you held is dropped rather than guessed at.
Does Tradeonomist give trading or tax advice?
No. It is educational. It gives no picks, entries or targets, and the superficial-loss flags, tax view and tax-year report are summaries of what you logged, not tax advice. Confirm anything that affects your taxes with a qualified professional.
Is the broker connection safe?
It is read-only and made through SnapTrade. You enter credentials on your broker’s or SnapTrade’s screens — Tradeonomist never sees your username, password or two-factor codes, and cannot place, modify or cancel an order, or move money. There is a page on exactly this.
What if I miss a day?
Only trading days count. Weekends and market holidays never break a streak and are never required to hold one — on a closed market there is nothing to reflect on. Beyond that you get one streak freeze a month on every plan including free, consumed automatically, and then the streak resets — but your Score, level and history do not. And a day you chose not to trade is not a miss: marking it completes the day.
What happens to my data if I stop paying?
You drop to the free tier and keep everything already written — reflections, lessons read, discipline history, trades imported. Sync stops and the trade log returns to its free limit for new entries. Nothing is deleted for lapsing.
What is the Score?
One number, 0 to 100, for what you did rather than what the market did. Three parts: how much of the curriculum you have read, how consistently you kept the rules you chose, and your win rate, which is the smallest of the three. It was called the Edge Score until September 2026 — an "edge" is an advantage, and implying the app confers one is exactly the promise it exists not to make.
What counts as a trade?
One closed round trip — a position opened and then closed. An open position is not a trade and is counted nowhere: until it is closed there is no result to measure. Imported sales are priced against the pooled average cost of the identical shares you held — the adjusted cost base, which is what Canadian rules require and what Canadian brokers report. Where a sale cannot be matched to shares the app knows you held — bought before your history starts, or transferred in — that portion is dropped rather than guessed at, because inventing a cost would put a fabricated profit into your win rate. Each option contract is its own trade, never netted against another strike or expiry; one held to expiry is recorded as closing at zero, and an exercise or assignment records no trade of its own because the position became stock. A trade you write yourself is dated by the day it closed, not the day you typed it.
I trade in two currencies. What does it show?
Each currency is shown on its own, and nothing is converted or added together. Canadian dollars and American dollars earned on different days at different rates do not sum to a figure that was ever true, so there is no blended total and no exchange-rate estimate. Where only one figure fits, the currency you set in Settings leads. Anything with no currency recorded is left out of the totals and said so rather than folded in. What is stored never changes — every trade keeps the currency it happened in.
Do I have to write a paragraph to log a trade?
No. One card, one sentence: “Bought 50 AAPL at 190, out at 185, stop 188” fills in the ticker, direction, quantity, prices and profit or loss as you type. The stop is optional. After you save, suggestions about your behaviour are offered for you to accept or dismiss. A day you did not trade is one tap.
Does Rule Lab change my Score?
No. Rule Lab is on Ultimate. It replays your own past trades against a rule with a number you set, per currency, and shows whether the result held up across both halves of your record. It is not a forecast and not advice, and measured rules never change your Score.
Can I log something I did not trade?
Yes, and it is worth doing. A position you considered and left alone is a decision, and the app records it as one: the instrument, why you passed, and nothing about money, because there is none. It counts as showing up for the day. A day you traded nothing at all also counts — sitting out is usually the disciplined choice, and no habit tool should punish it.
Is it available yet?
Not yet. It is in development and has not been submitted to the App Store or Google Play. Write for early access and you will hear when it is.
And the ones with awkward answers
Is this a trading signal service?
No, and it never will be. Tradeonomist gives no picks, no entries, no targets and no recommendations to buy or sell anything. It is an educational habit tool that scores your own behaviour. Nothing in it is financial, investment, tax or legal advice.
Will it make me a profitable trader?
It cannot promise that and does not try to. What it claims is narrower and testable: traders improve by showing up, learning deliberately, and keeping the rules they set — and all three can be measured without measuring money. If you want a tool that predicts returns, this is the wrong one.
Why does the score ignore my profit and loss?
Because P&L is mostly the market’s decision and only partly yours, and a score that rises on a lucky month teaches you that luck is skill. Win rate is in there at 25%, the smallest of three components. Nothing ranks anyone by profit, trade size or account value.
Does my reflection get sent anywhere?
The text of a daily reflection is sent to a language model to extract the trades you described. A picture you choose to have read is sent there too, and is not stored. If you use the AI coach, a summary of your own record is sent to write the note or answer. None of it is sent for any other purpose. Do not put passwords, account numbers or other people’s personal information in one. This is spelled out in the Privacy Policy rather than buried.
Why "Tradeonomist"?
An economist studies a system by measuring it honestly, including when the measurements are unflattering. That is the posture the app takes toward your trading.
